Translation of court documents: an administrative appeal in several languages

We assisted a large industrial group with the translation of court documents involving several countries, working in team to translate the legal and technical documentation.

What is it about?

The customer needed to file an appeal with an Italian court and serve it translated into French to the other party headquartered abroad. We have carried out this procedure on other occasions for the same company in the past. On this occasion there was also the need to translate into Italian a substantial technical documentation that had been drawn up in English only and could not be filed with the court appointed to examine it in its existing form.

What did the project look like?

The project comprised two activities: translation from Italian into French of the application prepared by the lawyers, along with all the declarations and correspondence necessary for the service abroad on the consular office, and the translation from English to Italian of the technical documentation, correspondence and other administrative documents concerning the challenged procedure. All the material translated for submission to the court had to be sworn within a very tight deadline: so it was a job carried out under great urgency.

How was the translation work organised?

This multilingual project was handled by a team of 8 professionals, who dealt with the translation, revision and overall management. Significant coordination work was required in order to ensure the translations were consistent with regard to terminology, both in the administrative and the strictly technical documents. We worked in continuous consultation with the customer company to agree on the preferred terminology with respect to technical details, acronyms and references given in the texts. Lastly, we prepared all the paperwork and handled the oath in court for a total of 23 documents.

To sum up:

101,000 words in less than ten days, specialised terminology, 3 areas of specialisation involved, complex documents featuring charts, diagrams and images. Despite the fact that the provision in question concerned an Italian company and the Italian legal system, considerable translation work was necessary, perhaps unanticipated by the Company, due to the fact that the counterparty was based abroad and that the court only accepts documentation in Italian. The teamwork enabled our customer to protect its rights, both in economic terms and with regard to its image.
